Guide

Set up OxidVault in 15 minutes

After following this guide, you will have OxidVault installed, your first vault created, and your most important credentials stored securely.

Deutsche Version: oxidvault.de/erste-schritte

Step 1: Download & Installation

  • Download the installer: Open GitHub release.
  • Start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • After installation, open the app from the Start menu.

Step 2: Create a new vault

  • Open OxidVault and select "Create new vault".
  • Choose a strong master password.
  • Store your master password safely — it cannot be recovered. OxidVault protects your data completely, which also means we have no access to it.
  • Set your username — this identifies you in the team vault.
  • Optional: Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) under Settings → Security for additional protection.
  • Choose a storage location, for example a network drive if your team works together.

Recommendation: Write the password on paper and keep it in a secure place — separate from your computer.

Step 3: Add your first passwords

  • Click "+ New Secret".
  • Choose the appropriate type, for example Web Login or SSH Key.
  • Enter your credentials and save the entry.

Step 4: Add team members (optional)

  • Open Settings → Users.
  • Create a new user.
  • Each team member uses their own password. This makes it clear who has access to which data.

Step 5: Install the browser extension (optional)

  • Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store.
  • Connect the extension to the desktop app.
  • After that, you can fill in logins in your browser more quickly.
